Centronics connectors have a plastic stem in the center of the connector body that holds the contact pins. The connector body is usually black or blue. Both male and female Centronics connectors are available. Male Centronics connectors have side latches that snap into tabs on the side of the female connector. The female connector also has slots for receiving pins from the male connector. Typically, a Centronics connection consists of a 36-pin male or female connector on a printer or other peripheral, a cable, and a 25-pin parallel port on a computer. The Centronics connector uses eight parallel data lines as well as other lines to read status information and send control signals.
The Centronics 36-pin connector is arranged in two rows of pins, each with 18 contacts. The connector is held in place by bail locks. The 36-pin connector is often used for parallel applications, especially for printers. It is also referred to as an IEEE-1284 Type B connector.
